Michel Platani once said, following France’s Worldcup win and the peak of Zidane’s career, “What Zidane could do with a football, Maradona could do with an orange.”

Maradona’s career peaked in the1986 Mexico World Cup. When he helped Argentina’s national soccer team win the World Cup, beating England. Four years later he almost did it again, taking an average Argentina team to the final of Italia 90. A game which was played so violently would that it could have been a fighting scene from Immortal Combat.

However, his career was dogged by controversy and in 1994, when he was sent home from the World Cup after being found guilty of doping. Overweight and loathed by FIFA and UEFA for always taking a stance against them and standing up for the little guy.

But this mercurial genius did what he did best with a ball at his feet

1994 FIFA World Cup

In the 1994 tournament, brilliant interplay, one-touch football outside the box and finished by Maradona in the top corner from 20 yards, he scored one of the best goals of the 1994 World Cup.

A squat man- leaves one for dead, leaves another for dead, dribbles past another, passes Shilton and scores the Greatest goals of all-time against England in the 1986 world cup.

In 2000, he survived a cocaine-induced heart failure. He later went to rehab. In recent years, he battled other health issues and underwent emergency surgery for a subdural hematoma several weeks ago.

His Memory Lives on

When you are younger you always believe your heroes will go on performing miracles for you, giving you moments with which to hang your childhood memories. If a picture paints a thousand words, then Maradona gave us an encyclopedia.

Tribute to the legend

Napoli FC is to rename the Stadio San Paolo stadium after Maradona, and yesterday the stadium was fully lit up throughout the night as a tribute to their favourite son. In Napoli, Maradona is equal to religion and he made history for them for giving them the only silverware in their history.
