PM ANNOUNCES AN EXTRA £100M TO BOOST PRISON SECURITY
The Guardian reports, the PM’s pledge to give £100m to improve prison security has been quickly dismissed as bravado. The funds will go towards X-ray scanners and metal detectors to prevent drugs, weapons and mobile phones from getting into jail. The £100m is in addition to the £70m announced last year for the same purpose.
The latest crime and justice-focused announcement from the PM have faced backlash. Lib Dem justice spokesperson said: “This is yet another hollow move by Boris Johnson to seem tough on crime, but yet again fails to tackle the causes of crime. The further funding announcement is still not being used to rehabilitate people to stop them from committing crimes in the first place.”
She added that none of the “bravado” will make the streets safer and said the PM should stop talking tough and look at the evidence in front of him.

CHILDREN OF BRITISH ISIS MEMBERS NOT ALLOWED BACK TO THE UK, GOVERNMENT RULES
The Independent reports the government has apparently ruled children of British ISIS members will not be allowed to return to the UK. There are at least 30 children stranded in camps in northern Syria. The camps are dangerous and overcrowded and the government has been under pressure from Syrian authorities and Washington to bring them home. According to The Times Sajid Javid said it would be too dangerous to send officials to retrieve the children. However, British aid workers and journalists regularly visit the camps.
Javid’s decision to leave British children in the camps were made before he became chancellor. He was reportedly concerned bringing the children home would give the parents a legal argument to return to the UK. However Kurdish authorities say if these children are not returned to the UK where they can be rehabilitated they are likely to become future terrorists.
