Private jets and the Royals
In today’s special feature we look into the Royal private jet scandal. Was it hypocrisy from the young Royals? Or racially-motivated bullying?
The Daily Mail reported Prince Harry had become a ‘preachy’ and ‘hypocritical’ royal. Duncan Larcombe, a royal expert, believes the former popular prince will lose his popularity. And the couple appears to be going from one PR disaster to another. He said: “A couple that has put themselves out there to lecture us all on needing to do our little bit to save the environment is going on holiday on private jets all summer.” The Daily Mail details the Duke and Duchess’s summer jet around. Adding the couple generated seven times the emission per person compared to a commercial flight when they flew to Nice.
Flare, however, says it’s time for people to stand up for Harry and Meghan. And says the private jet scandal is bullying and a racially motivated double standard. The story calls out the English press and highlights words often used to describe Meghan such as ‘picky’ – after one of her assistants quit. Flare asks why the Royals are facing such backlash when white environmentalists such as Leonardo DiCaprio are not held to the same standard. Leo is often seen flying on private jets and dedicates a lot of his time to the environment and yet is not criticised in this way. The press has also forgotten about Prince William and Prince Charles, both use private jets often and both are vocal about climate change. Flare notes it’s fair to want better from people with a platform. But, what’s not fair is using environmental concern to “thinly veil pretty obvious racism targeted at one specific person, meanwhile letting dozens of others off the hook.”
