Will we see a GTA 6 trailer this month? (pic: Rockstar Games)

Separate event
I see there’s quite a bit of chatter about GTA 6 all of sudden, some of it even from Take-Two. So what do we think are the chances of it getting its first trailer at one of the E3 style preview events? I’m sure Microsoft or Summer Game Fest would love to play host, although I suppose Sony was the most likely of them and obviously it wasn’t there.
I really don’t know why Microsoft has gone to all this trouble, and may still not succeed in buying Activision Blizzard, when some kind of exclusivity deal for GTA 6, even if it’s quite limited, would probably have a much bigger impact. That’s what they did with the DLC for GTA 4 on the Xbox 360, which is still by far their most successful console.
But I think that’s unlikely. I think what’s most likely is that Rockstar will just try and do everything itself and we’ll get a trailer drop out of the blue sometimes this year, probably late summer or early autumn. That’s when they did it for Red Dead Redemption 2 and I assume they feel that went well. I hope I’m wrong, because I’d go for a bit of hype right about now, but that’s what I think.

Falling confidence
So the reasons Redfall was bad were exactly what we all imagined. Bethesda were ultimately at fault for trying to make Arkane make a game they didn’t want to and didn’t have the skills for. But, at the end of the day, if their games aren’t selling it’s not like Bethesda are a charity, so I agree it’s a tough call.
Microsoft should’ve known better though. An hour with that game (thanks Game Pass) and you could tell it was a dud so why wasn’t there someone at Xbox ready to pull the plug and say that releasing Redfall would only make them look bad? Which it did.
Again and again we hear that Microsoft are too hands off with their management but they don’t seem to be taking the criticism to heart. Although I half expect to hear that, when they do changed, they end up being too heavy handed. I just don’t think they get.

Wireless Quest
After watching the Meta Quest showcase, I think I’m sold on Meta Quest 3. For me, VR has to be wireless to reach its full potential and its best chance of becoming mainstream. No offence to PlayStation VR2 owners: I’ll sacrifice graphics for freedom of movement.
I didn’t find the graphics were too bad on the Quest 2, so a two times more powerful chipset will do the job. My issue with Meta Quest 2 was comfort for longer periods, so a 40% reduction in size sounds promising.
The game support seems fairly strong too. The only downside is it’s made by Facebook. I hope in time we get a strong competitor in the wireless VR space.

Don’t end
I’ve found myself playing Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom less and less over the past week but it’s not because I’m not enjoying it, it’s the opposite. I’m clearly coming to the end and I don’t want it to be over. Even as someone that spent hundreds of hours on Breath Of The Wild this is an amazing game that I’m just astonished is as good as it is.
The physics stuff with the Ultrahand is amazing and, like GC said in their review, is certain to be overlooked by most people but is the most impressive technical achievement I’ve ever seen in a video game. Not just because of the way it works but because it’s all to the aid of the gameplay. This isn’t processing power being wasted on slightly more realistic graphics this is using the modest abilities of the Switch to create something that’d never existed in a game before.
It probably never will again either, at least until such technology is available off the shelf, as the work Nintendo has done here is incredible. I know Nintendo magic is really just hard graft but whatever it is this game is filled to the brim with it. An amazing experience that I will never forgot.

See no evil
There’s a saying I’ve recently come across about managers who claim they have no knowledge of toxic behaviour in their workplace: they’re either incompetent or they’re lying. Either way, they’re the ones who have failed at their jobs.
Anyway, interesting to see obscenely paid Bobby Kotick profess that any failings in the culture at the CompuGlobalHyperMegaNet that he rules over are down to ‘outside forces.’

Switching sides
I’m a big fan of PlayStation and was dead against Xbox buying Activision Blizzard but from things that’s came out I do hope they buy them. When the PlayStation 3 came out Sony was a bit nervous, then when the PlayStation 4 came out, and thanks to Xbox’s massive mess-up about Xbox One, Sony knew they had them. And when this gen came out they knew they had them again, that’s the reason their games went up to £70.
Back in the day of the PlayStation 3 there was no payment up front when pre-ordering a game off the store. You pre-ordered a few days before they took the money. Now it’s you pay straight away and if you cancel the money goes into your PlayStation wallet, not in your bank. The way it’s looking I might buy an Xbox Series X, or their next new one, and buy Game Pass.
I haven’t bought PS Plus for about six months now, because there isn’t a lot really to play online and I think the next 12 months I won’t be buying it. So Mr Spencer, you do get Activation Blizzard. Release a new console that looks a bit better than the Xbox Series X and I’ll buy one and you can sign me up. Just don’t put the price up too much!

First steps
I think I’m only reaching the end of the tutorial area in Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom but I’m just beginning to realise the multitude of possibilities this game offers.
This game is something else.

A long wait
The other day I was listening to a podcast and it was pointed out that if Starfield is a massive success then due to it taking six to eight years to make one of these games, and the studio already having the next Elder Scrolls and Fallout games lined up, then we wouldn’t see a Starfield 2 until 2047-ish. Tod Howard will also be 70 by then! Which given his new found wealth makes you wonder if he’d even stick around for Fallout 5.
This all made me wonder about the gaming experience of kids in school these days. When I was at secondary school it was in the PS1 era, and talking about and experiencing multiple games in a series was a thing. For example, we had three Tomb Raiders in three years.
But now, other than multi-studio setups to get a Call Of Duty or Assassin’s Creed out regularly, within the five year period of secondary school you’ll likely only ever get one Zelda/Halo/Mario, etc. All of which makes me think this just adds to the popularity of games like Fortnite, because although it’s not a full game there is at least multiple seasons within three years.

GC: It’s a good point. Although Zelda and Mario are a poor example as there’s only ever been one or two mainline entries per generation.
Inbox also-rans
I was finally going to take GC up on its recommendation of Etrian Odyssey and then I saw the prices of the games. Are these people crazy? Why is the most expensive game of the year three DS remasters of a niche dungeons crawler series no one has heard of?!
The Bishop
Such a shame about Marvel’s Midnight Suns. The game is fantastic but it’s such a flop we’ll never see the likes again, especially not anything using trading cards or focusing on the magic side of Marvel. My sympathies to the people let go.
