France will take on the EU rotating presidency from January 1. For the first time in 14 years, France will take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
It comes during a key period for French President Emmanuel Macron, who is expected to run for reelection in April 2022.

A brutal stance towards the British
“If I had to sum up in one sentence the goal of this [EU] presidency, which will run from 1 January to 30 June, I would say that we must move from a Europe of cooperation within our borders to a powerful Europe in the world, fully sovereign, free of its choices, and master of its destiny,” Macron said, laying out France’s plans.
One of the key takeaways from the french presidency is the stance they towards the British. With Macron fighting for reflection in April, it will come down to who takes what stances with the British. With recent spats over migrants and illegal channel crossings and fishing wars since Brexit.

It is no secret that the French have a particular sore history with the British and this will be a point that Macron will be keen to horn in on. During the Brexit negotiations, the French always insisted on using their veto power in offering any more concessions to the British.
What is the EU rotating Presidency?
Each Member State holds the EU rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union for six months. Also called the Council of Europe, France will hold the Presidency of the Council of the EU from 1 January to 30 June 2022. The Presidency of the Council organises meetings, brokers compromises, submits conclusions and ensures the coherency and continuity of the decision-making process.
The Council of the European Union brings together the ministers of the EU Member States who meet in configurations by sector of activity. It serves as the co-legislator of the European Union, along with the European Parliament.
