Tories win an overall majority in the general election
BBC News says the Conservatives have won an overall majority in the general election, passing the 326 threshold with seats still to declare.
The BBC says Boris Johnson will return to No 10 with a majority of 74.
The PM said it would give him a mandate to “get Brexit done” and take the UK out of the EU next month.
Labour had a disappointing night, Jeremy Corbyn said he would not fight another election. Labour lost seats across the North, Midlands and Wales in places which backed Brexit in 2016.

Johnson uses first speech after election win to repeat NHS campaign lies
The Independent says the prime minister used his first acceptance speech after exit polls showed the Tories are set for a landslide election victory to repeat a number of the campaign lies about the NHS.
Speaking to supporters after retaining his Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency seat, Mr Johnson said the Tories had been given a “powerful new mandate” to deliver on its manifesto.
Yes, we will recruit 50,000 more nurses and 6,000 more GPs, and we will build 40 new hospitals,” he said.
But days ago the PM publically admitted that in fact only 31,000 nurses would actually be recruited.

New Zealand troops complete daring volcano mission to retrieve bodies
Arab News says New Zealand troops retrieved six bodies from White Island volcano on Friday, winning praise for their “courageous” mission carried out under the threat of another eruption.
Two helicopters set off from Whakatane airport for the offshore volcano. The goal was to recover the remains of eight missing people still on the active volcano.
“Those staff showed absolute courage in order to ensure those six people were returned to their loved one,” police commissioner Mike Bush told reporters, saying they were operating in an “unpredictable and challenging” environment.

Trump impeachment: House panel poised to approve charges
Aljazeera says a key committee of the US House of Representatives is poised to approve two articles of impeachment against President Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
The House Judiciary Committee continued working late on Wednesday, debating the impeachment charges for more than 12 hours on Thursday before taking a break for an overnight recess.
The panel’s chairman, Jerrold Nadler, said the panel will reconvene for a vote on the impeachment articles at 10 am on Friday. If approved, the articles would then go to the full House for a vote next week.

EU agrees on carbon neutrality by 2050, Poland exempt
France24 says European Union leaders agreed on Friday to a 2050 climate neutrality target for the bloc.
But for now, Poland is left out of the commitment, they will return to the issue next June and left the door open for the Czech Republic.
Diplomats said the summiteers’ final decision – reached 10 hours after they had gathered – said “one member state”, meaning Poland could not commit to the target.
A 100-billion-euro plan for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by mid-century was announced a day before.

Rare Harry Potter book bought for 1p sells for £2,300
Sky News says a first edition Harry Potter And The Chamber of Secrets signed by JK Rowling and bought for a penny has sold at auction for £2,300.
The book was bought by a private international buyer after it went under the hammer in Staffordshire on Thursday.
Businessman Mark Cavoto, 51, who owns around 1,500 books from the series, ordered the collector’s item from Amazon for 1p, plus postage, without realising it was signed.
