Boris Johnson survived the confidence vote, but only narrowly – so what does the future look like for the PM?
The left-wing papers are reporting on the vote results as a ‘major blow’ to the PM and suggest the party needs to look forward to a life without Boris Johnson. The Independent, the Guardian, the Daily Mirror, the i and so on and so forth all say the PM’s days in office are numbered.
Boris Johnson survived the attempt by his own MPs to oust him as both Tory party leader and the prime minister but the scale of the rebellion means he isn’t out of the woods yet.
Whilst both rebels and supporters believed Boris would win the vote, they didn’t expect him to barely scrape through. The PM saw 41 per cent of his own MPs say they have no confidence in him and voted to out him.
UK newspapers such as the Daily Mail, the Sun and the Daily Express have used their front pages to urge the public to ‘let Boris get on with the job’ and make sure the public knows the PM ‘got the big stuff right.’
Many of the Tory-supporting papers use language such as ‘betrayal’, ‘desperate plotters’ and ‘attempted coup’ to describe the confidence vote and its results.
