Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan have teamed up with the UHT alliance to introduce a new UHD TV setting. In an attempt to preserve filmmakers’ creative intent on consumer displays. The UHD Alliance is a coalition whose members include Hollywood studios and consumer electronics manufacturers.
With various settings available on consumer TV’s there is a growing concern the filmmaker’s creative decisions are not always displayed. The new “Filmmaker Mode” will give the audience a cinematic representation of what the filmmakers intended in production and postproduction. Colour, contrast, aspect ration and time frames will be consistent with what the filmmakers envisioned.
More than 400 filmmakers including 140 directors and cinematographers gave insight into what could be done to improve HD settings. The Alliance further reached out to the Directors Guild of America, American Society of Cinematographers. And, American Cinema Editors and Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation.
“I started The Film Foundation in 1990 with the goal to preserve film and protect the filmmaker’s original visions so that the audience can experience these films as they were intended to be seen. Most people today are watching these classic films as at home rather than in the movie theatres, making Filmmaker Mode of particular importance when presenting these films which have specifications unique to being shot on film.” Martin Scorsese.
As the likes of Netflix and Disney+ continues to evolve, cinema is forced to accept the complexities of the streaming world. However, lovers of cinema will rejoice in knowing Hollywood is helping give the consumer a real cinematic experience at home. Thus, preserving the art of cinema.
