Former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley has announced her intention to vote for Donald Trump, her former opponent and former boss, in the upcoming 2024 US presidential election.
Haley, who previously served as Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations, was the final major contender to withdraw from the Republican primary contest in early March.
At the time of her withdrawal, she refrained from endorsing Trump, instead encouraging him to earn the votes of her supporters.
In her first public statement since exiting the race, delivered on Wednesday, Haley acknowledged that Trump “has not been perfect,” but characterised President Joe Biden’s tenure as a “catastrophe.”
Earlier this year, a significant portion of anti-Trump Republican voters supported Haley’s campaign. Despite her departure from the race over two months ago, her candidacy continues to garner support. She achieved over 20% of the vote in at least two state primary elections in the past fortnight.
The Biden campaign is actively courting these Haley Republicans, a demographic that includes moderate and college-educated independent voters, who could potentially influence the election in favour of the Democratic candidate. President Biden contends that Trump has consistently indicated he does not value the support of those who backed Haley.
The Republican party has secured the 218 seats needed for the majority in the House of Representatives – a week after the midterm elections, CBS News projects.
The GOP was expected to win back the lower chamber of Congress, but it was expected they would win with a much bigger margin.
The party’s margin in the House may be razor-thin but it’s still enough to stall President Joe Biden’s agenda for the next two years.
Whilst the Republicans have taken back control of the House, the Democrats will keep control of the Senate – the upper chamber of Congress.
The Republicans had hoped to win control of both chambers – but the expected ‘red wave’ never happened, and instead, the GOP massively underperformed at the 2022 midterms.
California’s 27th district went to incumbent Mike Garcia – the seat needed to secure the House majority on Wednesday.
The Republican party is now projected to win between 218-223 in the 435-seat House, according to CBS.
But with votes in several cliffhanger races still being tallied, their majority may not be clear for days or even weeks.
The former President is making a comeback to save America as he delivered his announcement at Mar-a-Lago, his Florida waterfront estate.
“In order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,” Trump said.
Donald Trump
Former President Donald Trump, aiming to become only the second commander-in-chief ever elected to two nonconsecutive terms, announced Tuesday night that he will seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.
Trump’s long-awaited campaign comes as the former president tries to reclaim the spotlight following the GOP’s underwhelming midterm elections performance – including the losses of several Trump-endorsed election deniers – and the subsequent blame game that has unfolded since Election Day.
Republicans failed to gain a Senate majority, came up short in their efforts to fill several statewide seats, and have yet to secure a House majority, with only 215 races called in their favor so far out of the 218 needed, developments that have forced Trump and other party leaders into a defensive posture as they face reproval from within their ranks.
On Tuesday night, he acknowledged the losses his party suffered but didn’t challenge the results – a marked shift from how he has long treated his own loss in the 2020 presidential election, which he continues to say was stolen.
He did deflect blame for the 2022 results by saying that voters had “not yet realized the full extent and gravity of the pain our nation is going through,” and then predicted that by 2024 “the voting will be much different.”
Trump’s paperwork has been filed with the Federal Election Committee establishing his candidacy and then made his announcement confirming the former President is making a comeback for the 2024 presidential elections.
Trump’s third presidential bid also coincides with a period of heightened legal peril as Justice Department officials investigating him and his associates revisit the prospect of indictments in their Trump-related probes.
The former president is currently being investigated for his activities before and during January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol and his retention of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate after he left office.

Democrat Katie Hobbs has defeated Trump-backed Republican candidate Kari Lake in Arizona’s race for governor, CBS News has projected.
The result is a big win for the Democrats as the public has rejected Kari Lake, who has peddled the false claims that Donald Trump won the 2020 US election.
Following the projection, Ms Lake appeared to suggest the result was incorrect and some votes for her had not been counted.
Elsewhere, a week on from the 2022 US midterm vote – the race to control the House of Representatives remains tight.
Republicans need at least 218 seats for a majority in the House, the party currently have 215 and the Democrats have won 211, according to projections from CBS News.
Winner Hobbs has called for unity, saying she would work for all Arizonans.
“Even in this moment of division, I believe there is so much more that connects us,” she said.
Democrats will keep Senate as control of the House remains undecided. After victories in close contests in Nevada and Arizona. Arizona is confirmed but Nevada is coming in predicted.
Biden says Democrats “feel good” about where they are as they look ahead to Georgia’s runoff election
Republicans may still eke out a narrow majority in the House of Representatives – and that would put an end to Mr Biden’s legislative ambitions.
The Democrats will retain control of the US Senate for the next two years. Here’s why that’s important:
