A rare ray of hope is being felt amongst members of the Rohingya community in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar. They believe the International Court of Justice (ICJ) will rule in their favour.
Gambia filed the case on behalf of all Muslim nations from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) with the ICJ. The case was filed over the alleged persecution of the Rohingya by the Myanmar military.
Gambia’s justice minister will lead his country during the hearings (Dec 10 to 12).
Canada and Bangladesh have been providing data and information regarding the atrocities against the Rohingya people.
The defence will be lead by Aung San Suu Kyi – Myanmar’s state counsellor and de facto leader. She will lead the defence lawyers on behalf of her country and the ICJ.
And to witness the process, Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque will be present in the courtroom. He will lead a team of 20 government officials and civil society representatives.
High optimism
There is high optimise amongst the Rohingya people in the city of Cox’s Bazar.
Sawyed Ullah said: “ We think justice will be ensured because all international human rights groups, different UN organisations and the international community have got evidence of the persecution of the Rohingya. All of them have visited the refugee camps many times and listened to the plight of the Rohingya.”
“Also, we have strong evidence of atrocities committed by the Myanmar government to root out the Rohingya from their birthplace, Rakhine,” Ullah added.
How the ICJ rules will hold a strong significance as decisions made by the ICJ are binding on member states.
Both Gambia and Myanmar are signatories of the United Nation Genocide Convention.
