Greta and the planet
In today’s special feature teen activist Greta Thunberg and her drive towards a better future. We take a look at climate change 2019:
The impact analysed
We start with the American news giant; CNN looks at how wealthy individuals can save the planet. They note the super-rich have far larger carbon footprints than your average individual. And the more they own and the more they travel means more greenhouse gases being emitted into the atmosphere. Studies show the poor suffer the most from climate change and it’s time for wealthy individuals to start making some changes. They say spending wisely, divestment, funding political parties and campaigns, funding research and being a role model can have a big impact on saving the planet.
Arab News reports on the Paris climate activists who barricaded themselves into a shopping centre ahead of the planned events taking place around the world by Extinction Rebellion Movement. Hundreds of protesters faced off with police all day on Saturday. There are a further 60 planned disruptions in cities from Monday in Europe, USA, Australia, India, Cape Town and Buenos Aires. Greta’s impact is clear. On the XR website, they say: “You can’t count on us or Greta to do this for you.” And adds: “Look inside yourself and rebel.”
The Guardian reports Australia’s central bank has warned that climate change is exposing the financial institutions and the financial system more broadly to risks that will rise if action is not taken. Whilst climate change is not yet a significant threat they have warned it is important for investors and institutions to manage carbon risk. Insurers are the most at risk, inflation-adjusted insurance claims for natural disasters this decade are twice what they were in the previous 10 years. Assets such as property located near the coast or bush-fire prone areas could decline in value if the risks become uninsurable. And warns financial institutions “also face reputational damage if they are seen to be contributing to climate change or failing to manage climate risks”.
