Senate Republicans block Ukraine and Israel aid bill
Senate Republicans stopped a plan to pass a $110 billion aid package. They wanted certain border compromises, which were not agreed upon. The package included $61 billion for Ukraine, along with funds for Israel and aid for Gaza.
Republicans insist that any help for Ukraine should be linked to broader US immigration and asylum reforms. The White House warned that funds for Ukraine might run out soon.
In the Senate vote, 51 were in favour and 49 against advancing the bill, falling short of the needed 60 votes. This puts the future of Ukraine’s aid in doubt, and lawmakers have to negotiate again before the winter break.
All Republican Senators voted against the bill, and independent Senator Bernie Sanders, who had concerns about military aid for Israel, also voted against it.
