Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – LIVE Coverage: The lighting of the beacons
The four-day Bank Holiday, celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee kicked off this morning with a very special Trooping the Colour in central London.
The Queen received a salute on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, and then reappeared at 1pm to wave to crowds and watch a fly-past.
The second and final event for today will be the lightning of the platinum jubilee beacons.
Buckingham Palace announced late on Wednesday that the Queen would be lighting the principle jubilee beacon in a special ceremony at Windsor castle.
Prince William will light the beacon at Buckingham Palace. These beacons are planned to be lit at 9.25 pm this evening.
There will be roughly 2,022 beacons to be lit across the UK and Commonwealth nations to celebrate the Queen’s 70-year reign.
Prince Louis on Buckingham Palace balcony – little royal steals show
Prince Louis’s appearance on the famous balcony of Buckingham Palace delighted royal fans as the young prince pulled faces, sulked and covered his ears as the planes flew overhead.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s youngest child Louis, 4, wore a strikingly similar sailor outfit that a very young Prince William wore in 1985 when William would have been three. It’s not known if it’s the same outfit but it bears a striking resemblance.
Louis is fifth in line to the throne and was seen with big brother Prince George and big sister Princess Charlotte in a carriage travelling down the Mall towards Buckingham Palace with Kate and the Duchess of Cornwall.
Louis waved excitedly at the crowd before his sister whispered to him and pushed his hand down but the little prince quickly began waving again.
On the balcony, Prince Louis provided more entertainment as he joined the Queen. He held his hands up to his temples at one point as he looked grumpily at the planes flying over.
He covered his ears and looked as if he was screaming before looking up at his mum who spoke to him.
He appeared to not want to leave the balcony as he continued to wave at the public as the royals started to leave the balcony.
Today kicked off the very special four day Bank Holiday events marking the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
