Netanyahu expected to announce halt to plans to overhaul Israeli judiciary
Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly set to announce a suspension to the proposed overhaul of the country’s judiciary, following the sacking of Defence Minister Yoav Galant over his opposition to the legislation.
The proposal has caused protests across the nation, with tens of thousands of people demonstrating against the move, which would limit the powers of Israel’s supreme court.
Those in favour of the changes argue they would better balance the branches of government and address perceived bias in court rulings, while critics say they will give politicians excessive control over the judiciary.
Netanyahu has reportedly held talks with opposition leaders in a bid to reach a compromise.
