As fans are eager for a new Xbox games showcase, Microsoft has instead announced an Oreos collaboration for the likes of Halo Infinite.
Last month, Microsoft assured less than enthused fans that, after its rather lacklustre 2022, 2023 will be an exciting year for Xbox owners.
Considering the company has made this sort of promise before, there was some understandable scepticism – at least until Microsoft can host an Xbox showcase to announce new titles and provide updates on upcoming releases.
Just over one week into January, though, and the first big announcement it has to share is a collaboration with Oreos.
At some point this month, limited special edition packs of Oreos will be released, depicting Xbox iconography on the cookies, like the Xbox logo and the face buttons from the Xbox controller.
If the promise of a slightly different looking biscuit (cookie? what even are Oreos?) doesn’t seem reason enough to snap some up, packs will also come with codes to unlock unique DLC in select Xbox games.
Examples include armour and vehicle skins for the likes of Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, and Sea Of Thieves, although Microsoft hasn’t fully elaborated on how you’ll unlock them.
All the announcement on Xbox Wire says is, ‘By scanning the Oreo Xbox Special Edition cookies and by cracking exclusive cookie combinations, inspired by the cheat codes hidden in games throughout history, fans can unlock a range of prizes.’
Participants will also be entered into a draw for a chance to win consoles, Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, and a family holiday.
The announcement doesn’t specify in which countries you’ll be able to buy the new Oreos or when they’ll release but this website may point to them coming out next week, on January 16.

This probably isn’t what Xbox fans had in mind for the start of the platform’s year, but there are rumblings, courtesy of Windows Central’s Jez Corden, of a potential showcase in the near future.
Earlier today, in response to someone complaining about Microsoft’s lack of communication on its titles and absence at December’s The Game Awards, Corden simply tweeted, ‘Give it a few days’ and then the promise that there’s ‘definitely something cooking.’
Corden has been a reliable source of info in the past, having reported on Obsidian’s Pentiment long before it was announced and the new Crash Bandicoot multiplayer spin-off.
He has recently commented on the Oreos announcement, saying that his info was wrong and that this was all Microsoft had planned for this week, but he’s probably being facetious.
