Liverpool to pioneer UK’s first attempt at mass Covid testing
The Guardian says up to half a million people in Liverpool are set to be tested for Covid-19 under the UK government’s first attempt to embark on city-wide mass testing and track down every case of the virus.
The Guardian also understands that the self-isolation period for those who test positive for coronavirus, and their contacts, could be cut from the current 14-day period to seven days as early as this week.

France’s new Covid-19 cases top 52,000 in latest 24-hour record
France24 says French health authorities on Monday reported 52,518 new Covid-19 infections over the past 24 hours, setting a new daily record since the outbreak of the disease, up from 46,290 on Sunday.
That tally suggests the country’s new lockdown is yet to produce its first effects, as hospitalisations for the disease have gone up by more than 1,000 again, reaching a four-month high of 25,143.

Virus cases set to rise in Saudi Arabia, warn health chiefs
Arab News says Saudi health chiefs on Monday warned members of the public to prepare for an increase in the number of coronavirus disease Covid-19 cases in the Kingdom.
With infection rates on the rise throughout the world, changing weather conditions, and people dropping their guard over safety precautions, Ministry of Health officials predicted an upsurge in cases was inevitable.

Japan reports fewer than 500 cases for first time in more than a week
CNN says Japan recorded 490 new coronavirus cases Monday, the country’s Health Ministry announced today, marking the first time Japan reported fewer than 500 cases since October 26.
Monday’s cases bring the total number of Covid-19 cases in Japan to 102,993. As of Monday, 93,383 of those people have recovered, but 163 coronavirus patients remain in a serious condition, the health ministry said.

Facing Covid-19 pandemic economic woes, Nepal reopens to adventurers
CNA says adventurers looking to scale Nepal’s Himalayan peaks and trek its mountain trails can finally do so for the first time in seven months, as the country reopens to foreigners even as the Covid-19 pandemic has left it short of hospital beds.
Foreign visitors are a major source of income for Nepal and the closure has impacted the estimated 800,000 people who work in the tourism industry.

In Pictures: Displaced Syrians fear spread of Covid-19
Aljazeera says humanitarian workers fear a further rise in novel coronavirus cases would be disastrous in northwest Syria, where almost 1.5 million people live in overcrowded camps or shelters, often with poor access to running water.
Health authorities in northwest Syria announced 5,075 cases of Covid-19 so far, including 42 deaths.
Of those, more than 860 cases have been recorded among healthcare staff and almost 330 people in the camps.
