The Lebanese Armed Forces released a statement on Sunday that said ten soldiers were hurt after protestors threw stun grenades at army forces during demonstrations in Lebanon’s northern city of Tripoli.
Lebanese civilians took to the streets of Tripoli over the weekend to express anger over the dire economic situation and difficult living conditions as the national currency plunged to a new record low.
According to the army, a gang of young guys on motorcycles hurled stun grenades at the soldiers. According to the army, another set of troops stationed in al-Nour Square to ensure security during protests were attacked with stones by demonstrators.
On Saturday, demonstrators tried to storm central bank offices in two major cities, state media reported after the national currency plunged to a new record low on the black market.
According to the National News Agency, some protesters were able to break through the gates of a central bank branch and access the courtyard, but the army prevented them from reaching the building.
Lebanon has been struggling to deal with its economic crisis since late 2019, which has worsened due to the effects of the coronavirus outbreak and the massive Beirut port explosion in August 2020.
Fuel, medications, and other essential items are now in limited supply throughout the country. The majority of Lebanese have lost buying power, and more than half of the population now lives in poverty.
