Convicted killer Derek Chauvin in 23-hour isolation in Minnesota prison
Ex-cop Derek Chauvin, who was convicted on all three counts of murdering George Floyd, is being held in isolation for 23 hours a day, authorities have said.
The maximum-security prison staff checks on Derek Chauvin every 30 minutes, his meals are delivered to his cell and he will have to do mental health checks every three months of his incarceration.
A spokesperson said it was “for his safety.”
On Wednesday, he was connected by a US jury of the murder of George Floyd. Chauvin had knelt on Floy’s neck for over nine minutes during his arrest – and did not remove his knee even after Floyd went limp.
The former office denied charges of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
After just 10 and a half hours of deliberation, the jury unanimously convicted Chavin on all three counts.
Minnesota sentencing guidelines suggest he could face 12-and-a-half years in prison for his murder conviction as a first-time offender. But prosecutors could see a maximum of 40 years if the judge determined there “aggravating factors.”
After the judge announced the verdict, Chauvin was led away in handcuffs and taken to Oak Park Heights prison.
A spokesperson said he was given “administrative segregation” status for his safety and is in the Administrative Control Unit – the most secure unit.
The spokesman added:
“Administrative segregation is used when someone’s presence in the general population is a safety concern.
“There are 41 people in the ACU and cells are monitored by cameras with corrections officers also doing rounds at least every 30 minutes.
“He’ll have on average an hour a day out of his cell for exercise (alone). Meals are delivered to his cell.
“He is in a single cell and will not have contact with other incarcerated people.”
