Katie Couric has shared an update on her health following her breast cancer diagnosis.
In September, the former Today show presenter revealed her condition on Instagram, and used it as an opportunity to urge others to get checked out.
The 65-year-old insisted that she’s ‘feeling great’ and is ‘really lucky’ during a rare public appearance, as she attended the Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday.
Discussing her health on the red carpet, she said: ‘I’m doing great. I’m feeling great. I’m really lucky. Like one in three women, I was diagnosed with cancer. But I was very fortunate because early detection is everything and it was detected early.
‘So, it’s not only treatable, it’s curable. And that’s why everyone needs to get screened.
‘I know that early detection saves lives. And I know a lot of people skip their mammograms because of the pandemic. And I wanted to make sure people knew that they have to get their mammograms.

’If they have dense breasts, they should talk to their medical provider about getting ultrasounds. I made it my mission to try to increase cancer awareness. So, this is just another step towards that goal.’
Following her diagnosis, fans and famous faces around the world offered Katie their support on social media.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, she said that the reaction had been ‘flattering’, but wanted to ensure that others took her warnings to heart.
‘I think we all need to be advocates for our own health and support cancer research,’ she added to the publication. ‘So one day we’ll see the end of cancer. Maybe not in my lifetime, but hopefully in my daughter’s lifetime.’
Katie has been a firm supporter of preventative testing over the years, but explained that she had missed her latest mammogram during the pandemic.
When she eventually made the appointment, her doctor noticed something on her breast, and ordered a biopsy to determine her findings.
The TV star recalled feeling stunned when she was informed of her diagnosis, which she said was ‘stage 1A’ cancer – which has caught early enough that it could be treated.
Katie went under the knife on July 14 and later began radiation treatment on September 7, undergoing her final session last week.

Announcing her illness in a lengthy essay on her website, she revealed her hopes that this could be a ‘teachable moment’ for her fans, and that her experience could potentially save someone’s life.
‘Please get your annual mammogram,’ she added. ‘I was six months late this time. I shudder to think what might have happened if I had put it off longer.’
