Ireland’s prime minister Leo Varadkar said Thursday at the start of a EU summit in Brussels that the European Union is losing its credibility because of a lack of a strong position in the war between Israel and Hamas, urging his counterparts to call for a humanitarian ceasefire. Varadkar’s demand is backed by his Belgian, Spanish and Maltese counterparts who penned a joint letter to the European Council last week. The call for a ceasefire in Gaza is however unlikely to be approved by the EU due to opposing countries such as Germany and Austria, FRANCE 24’s correspondent Dave Keating said.
