Senior Johnson adviser to leave Downing Street
BBC News says one of Boris Johnson’s closest aides, director of communications Lee Cain, has resigned amid reports of internal tensions in Downing Street.
In a statement he said he was leaving next month, despite having been offered the role of No 10 chief of staff.

Extra bank holiday announced for Queen’s 2022 platinum jubilee
The Guardian says it might be more than 18 months to wait, but the nation is set to be treated with an extra day off to mark the Queen reaching 70 years on the throne.
As part of what is being billed as a “blockbuster” celebration for Her Majesty’s platinum jubilee in 2022, people will enjoy a UK-wide four-day weekend in recognition of the first time that a British monarch reaches the milestone.

Nurse charged with murder over baby deaths at Cheshire hospital
Sky News says a nurse has been charged with eight counts of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder in connection with baby deaths at a hospital in Cheshire.
Lucy Letby, 30, is due to appear at Warrington Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, a spokesman for Cheshire police said.

US Embassy in Pakistan apologizes for ‘unauthorized post’ predicting PM Khan will lose power after Trump defeat
RT News says the US Embassy in Pakistan is claiming their Twitter account was accessed “without authorization” when it retweeted a political message from Ahsan Iqbal, a lawmaker rival of Prime Minister Imram Khan.
“The US Embassy does not endorse the posting or retweeting of political messages,” the embassy’s account tweeted on Wednesday. “We apologize for any confusion that may have resulted from the unauthorized post.”

EU hopes to distribute vaccine within months – latest updates
TRT World says the EU expressed hope that it could start vaccinating people against the virus as early as next year.
The head of the ECDC said that a vaccination programme could be kicked off “optimistically (in the) first quarter next year, but I can’t be more precise,” as trials in the US and Russia suggested that vaccines currently in the final stages of testing were so far proving very effective.

Arnab Goswami: India’s controversial TV presenter freed on bail
Aljazeera says India’s Supreme Court on Wednesday granted bail to the head of a nationalist TV channel, a week after he was arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of an interior decorator, a case the channel blamed on politicians angered by its news coverage.
The court said a lower court had been wrong to deny bail to Arnab Goswami and ordered his release on bail of 50,000 Indian rupees ($670).

Biden names Ron Klain as his White House chief of staff
CNN says Joe Biden has tapped Ron Klain to be his incoming chief of staff, the Biden transition office said in a news release Wednesday, elevating his longtime aide to one of the most powerful positions in the White House.
Klain is one of Biden’s most trusted campaign advisers and was long seen as the most likely pick for the top job. He previously served as chief of staff to Vice President Al Gore during the Clinton administration and Biden during his tenure as President Barack Obama’s vice president.

New York imposes new Covid-19 restrictions as hospital admissions mount
France24 says Andrew Cuomo has imposed a new round of restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus as the infection rate climbed and hospitalisations soared in NY.
“We’re seeing a national and global Covid surge, and New York is a ship on the Covid tide,” the governor told reporters, adding that contact tracing identified late-night gatherings at bars, restaurants and gyms as key virus spreaders in the state.
