“Not recognizing stalking is a lack of respect for the victim’s family. And it is yet another confirmation that the institutions don’t care about women.” Elena Cecchettin, Giulia’s sister, returns to talk on social media. This time he does it on the first degree sentence that sentenced Filippo Turetta to life imprisonment.
Judgment and reality are not the same thing
“A judicial sentence does not always correspond to the reality of the facts – Elena writes on Instagram – It is called judicial truth, and that is what is reported by the verdict. And that’s it. It doesn’t take away the pain, the physical and psychological violence that the victim has suffered. What happened doesn’t disappear just because one aggravating circumstance is not contested, or more than one. And it doesn’t even take away the pain and anxiety that I personally had to suffer as a person close to Giulia dragged into the states of anxiety and disturbance.”
“Clearly – he adds – I am not suggesting that the pain Giulia felt is comparable, however it is right to remember that not recognizing the stalking is a lack of respect for the victim’s family”.
The institutions don’t care about women
From private to public, Elena Cecchettin continues, accusing the institutions: “That said, the non-recognition of stalking (I’m not talking about the other aggravating factor because the situation speaks for itself) is yet another confirmation that the institutions don’t care about women . You are only a victim if you are dead. What you suffer in life you manage on your own. How many women will not be able to save themselves from their tormentor if even in the most obvious cases guilt is not recognized? But it’s fine with the sappy phrases on November 25th and the explanation leaflets”.
The role of lawyers
A story is also dedicated to Turetta’s defense, to the lawyers who had said “Turetta is not Escobar”, “humiliating Giulia’s memory”, her father Gino had commented, before the handshake yesterday in the Chamber. “Being a lawyer – Elena writes – it’s a profession and everyone has the right to a defense and we don’t mind this. However, this doesn’t mean you have no responsibility. Claiming that the defendant’s behavior is ‘obsessive, almost autistic spectrum’ and justifying it with this statement all that what happened is shameful. We are talking about behaviors that harm a person’s freedom and life, and associating them so lightly with neurodivergence, as well as trivializing and belittling these actions, also worsens the prejudices that exist in our society. they are already there for neurodivergent people and for the autistic spectrum.”
The aggravating circumstances make the difference
“I conclude by saying – Elena ends – that the fact that those who maintain that the sentence would have been the same even with the other two aggravating circumstances has understood nothing. If nothing can bring Giulia back, at least it can make a difference for other women in the future. It is It’s easy to lock a person up forever by washing your hands and saying you’ve done justice. But is this the real justice if we don’t start taking the issue seriously, everything that was said about Giulia which was supposed to be the last one? they are just words to wind Yes, it makes a difference to recognize the aggravating circumstances, because it means that gender violence is not only present where the knife or the fist is present much earlier killed my sister? Not just a violent hand, but the careless justification for the stages of violence that anticipate femicide.”
