Boy killed after France World Cup win
A boy was run over and killed in the southern French city of Montpellier just after France beat Morocco to reach the 2022 World Cup final.
The boy, 14, was struck by a car after the match and later died in hospital.
Images shared online show a car draped in a French tricolour surrounded by people who then grabbed the flag.
The driver appears to panic, and drives into two teenagers.
As he turned his car around and sped off, the boy was hit and went into cardiac arrest.
“Immense sadness that a sporting event should end in total tragedy,” said local MP Nathalie Oziol.
The car was reportedly found abandoned not far from the scene of the accident, and the police are searching for the driver.
Tensions flared after France win
The incident happened in Montpellier’s north-western district of La Paillade, just 30 minutes after France beat Morocco 2-0 to book a spot in the final against Argentina on Sunday.
Tensions between fans briefly spilled over in the centre of the city and flares were lit. Police responded with tear gas.
There is a large Moroccan community in France – around 1.5 million people.
Celebrations were mostly peaceful, but police had responded to some troubles with tear gas – including troubles with far-right youth in the centre of Lyon.
Police were heavily deployed across the country and 167 arrests have been reported.
