Battlefield 2042 – it has now been zero days since fans said Battlefield is a dead series (pic: EA)
EA’s plans for Battlefield’s future remain vague, but fans are already dreading them anyway.
It’s been obvious for a while that EA needs to do some serious rethinking with its Battlefield franchise. 2021’s Battlefield 2042 proved very unpopular with most fans at launch and its subsequent updates appear to have done little to bolster the player count.
Earlier this year, EA went and cancelled plans for a mobile game spin-off (and shut down the developer with it) and had to assure fans and investors that the series remains an important part of the company’s plans.
At the time, CEO Andrew Wilson talked about ‘[bringing] Battlefield back in an entirely new way in the future,’ and now he has hinted at plans of a ‘reimagination’ for the series.
That is precisely as vague as it sounds, although it does fall in line with Wilson’s previous statement and strongly points to Battlefield undergoing some kind of major change in focus.
In a recent earnings call, while discussing upcoming projects like the Iron Man and Black Panther games, Wilson mentions a ‘reimagination of Battlefield as a truly connected ecosystem,’ as transcribed by The Motley Fool.
This makes it sound as if EA wants Battlefield to become more of a live service game, with multiple projects that all connect with each other. Perhaps in a manner similar to how Activision integrates its annual Call Of Duty games with the Warzone battle royale.
In fact, EA mentioned similar ideas back in 2021, when it talked of creating a wider Battlefield universe comprised of multiple games that all connect together. We’ve yet to see any of this bear fruit though, since there’s been no new Battlefield games since Battlefield 2042 and no official announcements of any new ones.

As vague as they are, fans aren’t taking Wilson’s statement well, expressing frustration at what sounds like typically impenetrable corporate-speak.
In a Reddit thread titled ‘Literally the same s***, but a different coat of paint,’ user huxtiblejones begs for a ‘normal’ Battlefield game, adding ‘Don’t reinvent the wheel. This is very simple. Go back to basics and stay there.’
‘No one wants a reimagining,’ says varietyviaduct. ‘We’ve told them for over a decade we literally want Battlefield 3 and 4 with new maps and updated graphics. It is really not as hard as they’re making it out to be.’
They’re not the only ones, as several other users claim they’d rather have a remaster of one of the older games, such as the very first Battlefield or Battlefield: Bad Company 2; the latter of which EA delisted from digital storefronts back in March.
