Italian court convicts more than 200 people in Calabria mafia trial EU

An Italian tribunal on Monday convicted 207 people and sentenced them to a combined 2,100 years in prison on charges related to their membership in Italy’s ‘Ndrangheta organised crime syndicate, one of the world’s most powerful, extensive and wealthy drug-trafficking groups. The mafia group, which is tied to some 150 Calabrian families, has a near monopoly on the European cocaine trade, bringing in €50 billion annually according to some estimates, FRANCE 24’s Seema Gupta said.

Far-right outsider Milei wins Argentina presidential run-off election Javier Milei has won Argentina’s presidential run-off poll, according to provisional results. The far-right libertarian has received a call from his rival, Sergio Massa who conceded. Former US President Donald Trump congratulated Milei on his victory, saying “Make Argentina Great Again!”. Argentina is currently struggling with rising inflation and an economy in crisis. Milei’s proposals include detonating the central bank and introducing the US Dollar as the country’s currency. Provisional results showed Milei had nearly 56% of the vote compared with 44% for Massa, with almost 90% of votes counted.

Israel hopeful of Hamas deal to release hostages in ‘coming days’ The US remains hopeful of reaching a deal to free a significant number of hostages “in the coming days,” according to the Israeli ambassador to the US.
