Argentina’s ex-president Alberto Fernández accused of abuse
Argentine prosecutors have launched an investigation into former President Alberto Fernández, who is accused of severely injuring his ex-partner, former first lady Fabiola Yáñez. Yáñez, 43, filed a complaint last week alleging that Fernández, 65, physically assaulted her and subjected her to psychological threats during their relationship, which ended after he left office in 2023. She also accused him of forcing her to have an abortion.
Fernández denies all allegations and has been banned from leaving the country during the investigation. Prosecutor Ramiro Gonzales has formally requested that charges be brought against the former president.
The investigation gained momentum after photos of Yáñez with a black eye and bruises were leaked and published by local media, sparking outrage in Argentina. Fernández has dismissed the allegations as unfounded, claiming in a recent interview that Yáñez’s injuries were due to a “cosmetic treatment.”
A judge will ultimately decide whether charges will be filed. Fernández, who began his political career in the early 1980s, served as Argentina’s president from 2019 to 2023.
