Snake and The Boss are not PlayStation exclusives? (pic: Konami)
Everyone seems to agree that a remake of PS2 game Metal Gear Solid 3 is on its way but apparently it’s not a PlayStation exclusive.
Rumours about a Metal Gear Solid remake have been doing the rounds for years and although they’ve only recently begun to focus on 2004 entry Metal Gear Solid 3, multiple sources have indicated that it’s real and that it’s likely going to be announce at the PlayStation Showcase on Wednesday.
The initial rumours suggested that (like the Silent Hill 2 remake, also from Konami) the game would be a PlayStation 5 exclusive – timed or otherwise.
However, a new source claims that is not the case and that the remake will be released for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, ad PC. Although there is the possibility of a marketing deal or exclusive DLC for PlayStation.
Like many of the early entries in the series, Metal Gear Solid 3 was originally a PlayStation 2 exclusive but a HD remaster was released for the Xbox 360 in 2011.
The idea that the remake is not an exclusive and yet is being announced at the PlayStation Showcase isn’t particularly unusual, especially if there’s some minor partnership with Sony. But the lack of exclusivity does imply that Sony has not helped with development, as was previously suggested.
Supposedly the trailer will be fairly brief though and only a teaser, and not a full gameplay trailer. So not one of the key focuses of the showcase.
The information comes from the usually reliable Tom Henderson at Insider Gaming, who also commented on the rumours of another Castlevania game from Konami.
The wording is ambiguous though and while he says he’s unsure whether it will be at Summer Game Fest (the E3-seque online event organised by The Game Awards’ Geoff Keighley) it’s not clear whether he believes the game to be real or not – or indeed what it is or who’s making it.
Back in 2021, Konami did indicate they had a number of new games to announce and only pulled out of E3 at the last minute. If they did want to make a splash, about re-entering the games industry, then announcing new games in their three biggest franchises would certainly do it.
Whether that’s what actually happens, though, remains to be seen. The PlayStation Showcase takes place on Wednesday at 9pm BST. Summer Game Fest is on June 8 and the Xbox Games Showcase on June 11.
