Gwyneth Paltrow ski crash trial: ‘blood-curdling scream’
A Utah court has heard that a man who is suing Gwyneth Paltrow over a 2016 ski accident heard a “blood-curdling scream” just before the collision.
Terry Sanderson, 76, claims that the actress is responsible for the crash and is seeking $300,000 in damages. Paltrow, who denies responsibility and has countersued for $1 and her legal costs, was said to be a “skilled” skier who was not reckless or dangerous, according to her ski instructor, Eric Christiansen.
Sanderson, who described the accident as a “serious, serious smack”, said he has since experienced physical, mental and emotional injuries, including becoming a “self-imposed recluse”, and losing friends and his partner.
During his testimony, Mr Sanderson recounted hearing an angry male voice that accused him of causing the collision in the aftermath of the accident. Later, it was revealed that the voice belonged to Deer Valley ski instructor Eric Christiansen. Mr Sanderson claimed that Christiansen had been persistent in blaming him and attempting to bully him.
However, Mr Christiansen said it was absurd to claim he had been hostile towards Mr Sanderson, as confrontational ski instructors do not remain employed at the resort. He also defended Ms Paltrow, stating that she was not a reckless or dangerous skier and was skilled at making tight turns.
Mr Christiansen further disclosed that neither Mr Sanderson nor Ms Paltrow had requested assistance from the ski patrol after the accident. He explained that calling ski patrol is necessary when people are injured so that they can provide medical aid and take statements. If either of them had requested assistance, it would have altered the situation.
Mr Christiansen denied any attempt at a cover-up to protect the actress.
Paltrow’s children, Apple and Moses, are expected to take the stand later in the week.
The trial is ongoing.
