The three Americans found dead in a Mexico City Airbnb died from carbon monoxide poisoning, authorities said on Tuesday.
Kandace Florence, Jordan Marshall, and Courtez Hall were found mysteriously dead in an Airbnb on October 30. The trio had taken a trip to Mexico City to celebrate Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.
After an autopsy, police in Mexico City said that Americans had died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
The Airbnb rental unit was located in La Rosita, an upscale neighborhood in western Mexico City.
According to the report, security at the apartment complex called police when they ‘detected an intense smell of gas in an apartment.’
Before their bodies were found, Florence told her boyfriend in the US that she had been feeling sick that night. She originally told him that night it felt like she was ‘drugged,’ Spanish newspaper El País reported.
‘I am literally suffering and tossing around the apartment. I’m shaking,’ she reportedly told him.
Florence’s boyfriend became concerned when the call was abruptly disconnected. When repeated attempts to reach her didn’t work, he called the Airbnb host and asked them to do a wellness check.
Florence and Marshall, both 28, grew up together in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Florence still lived in the area, where she owned a candle business that sold in local boutiques.
Marshall and Hall, 33, both worked as teachers in New Orleans. Hall had just started a new job as 7th grade history teacher at KIPP Morial middle school.
Earlier this year, another trio of American tourists died in the Bahamas from the same condition.
In May, Michael Phillips, Robbie Phillips, and Vincent Chiarella were found dead in two separate villas at Sandals Emerald Bay resort after reporting feeling sick the night before. Their cause of death was determined to be carbon monoxide poisoning.
