French MPs approve 20 billion-euro package to help with soaring inflation
French MPs approve 20 billion-euro package to help with soaring inflation as households struggle to cope with rising energy and food prices.
The vote came following a heated debate at the National Assembly, where President Macron no longer has a majority. The Senate also approved the package on Wednesday evening.
The bill was a major promise from Macron, who was re-elected in April.
Annual inflation hit a record 8.6% for the 19 countries using the euro currency, swollen by a huge increase in food and energy costs fueled partly by the war in Ukraine. In France, annual inflation is estimated to be running at 6.5%.
