I hear that both US President Donald Trump and Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have threatened to dump captured Daesh fighters on the UK border if the government does not start repatriating them from Syrian camps.
Well, it’s about time someone took a stand because I’ve said for long enough that Britain has got to stop using the rest of the world as a dumping ground for UK-born ne’er-do-wells!
Trump told media as he announced the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi that European nations had proven to be a “tremendous disappointment”.
Talking about those who rallied to the ill-fated Daesh leader’s call to form a Caliphate, Trump pointed out: “They came from France, they came from Germany, they came from the UK. They came from a lot of countries, and I actually said to them, if you don’t take them, I’m going to drop them right on your border and you can have fun capturing them again.”
Now Turkey is threatening similar after Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said on Saturday that Turkey would not deal with the terror prisoner issue alone.
“That is not acceptable to us. It’s also irresponsible,” he said. “We will send the captured Daesh members to their countries.”
It gives me no pleasure to say: “I told you so” but one of the first jobs on the next government after the General Election on December 12 will be to resolve this problem once and for all.
British citizenship should not be withdrawn from anyone, no matter what they’ve done. it should not be negotiable.
Western nations pride themselves in having a civilised society with functioning judicial systems. If the likes of France, Britain, Germany and other EU countries are struggling to deal with these terrorist fighters and their families then shame on them.
Surely war crimes tribunals can be established to deal with these suspects? If a broken, war-weary Europe could deal with Nazis through the Nuremberg Trials then it should be easy enough to deal with a bunch of suspected militants picked up in combat zones in Iraq and Syria.
