Dr Mike Mew faces misconduct hearing over viral ‘mewing’ TikTok treatments (Picture: PA Wire)
An orthodontist whose methods for shaping the jawline went viral online has been accused of advising treatment that ‘carried a risk of harm’ to children.
Dr Mike Mew, who has racked up almost 2billion views on TikTok with his ‘mewing’ techniques, faces a misconduct hearing in London.
Lydia Barnfather, for the General Dental Council, said he sought to use ‘head and neck gear’ to help align teeth and provided advice and treatment to two children, Patient A and Patient B.
Patient A was advised to use upper and lower arch expansion appliances and wear neck gear so ‘all the 32 teeth align naturally without the need for fixed braces’, the tribunal heard.
He also suggested a lingual tongue-tie release, which he said would allow her to rest her tongue on the roof of her mouth to strengthen the jaw.
She was left with her upper and lower teeth slanted forward, a recession of the lower front teeth, an unaligned upper tooth and an ulcer. Patient B was left with recession of his lower front teeth.
Dr Mew will say there is evidence to back up his treatment, the panel heard. The tribunal adjourned until next week.
