Cody Rhodes made a surprise appearance on WWE Raw this week as he continues to recover from a devastating injury earlier this year.
The American Nightmare made his return to WWE at WrestleMania 38 in April and appeared again at WrestleMania Backlash the following month before fighting Seth Rollins for a third time inside Hell In A Cell in June.
However, he went into that match with a torn pec and has been on the shelf ever since, with fans clamouring to see him back in action.
Monday night’s episode of Raw was a ‘best of’ edition recapping the biggest moments of 2022, and Rhodes made an unexpected appearance to discuss his comeback and plans for 2023.
‘I would like to pick up right where I left off. A lot of things have happened in my life – not just the injury, not just what I did while I was away and my exit, but the birth of my daughter,’ he said.
‘Even though I wasn’t present for a good chunk of the year, waht I Was able to do I think did really register with a lot of the WWE Universe. I want to pick up right back where I left off, right back in that little kid’s shoes who had the biggest dreams.
‘In this time that we’re in, I have an opportunity at making that happen. I’m being incredibly vague here, I get it, but I think anybody who is a fan of what we do can read between the lines.
‘There is one thing that I came back for specifically, one thing. A torn pec couldn’t stop me – I couldn’t name anything that could stop me. It has to be done, it needs to be done, and I wanna get it done.’
There has been reports that WWE is keen to revisit his rivalry with Rollins once Rhodes is able to wrestle again, but the former Intercontinental Champion has played down the idea.
He added: ‘Make no mistake about it. Seth and I are not chummy, we’re not best friends. But Seth Rollins is one of the top three wrestlers in the entire world. Three matches, not just one but three matches was an honour.
‘Again, we’re not best friends. We don’t exchange Christmas cards, but there’s a bond by battle there with Seth and myself. I know he’s probably clamouring for a fourth match, [but] I don’t know if that’s on my radar.’
WWE Raw airs Monday nights at 1am on BT Sport 1.
