TRUMP VOWS TO HIT THE TALIBAN ‘HARDER’ THAN EVER
Arab News says President Trump used 9/11 remembrance commemorations to announce an escalation of the US military assault on the Taliban. During the ceremony, Trump said that over “the last four days” US forces have “hit our enemy harder than they have ever been hit before and that will continue.” But he did not confirm the nature of the US attack against the Taliban. He confirmed the attack was ordered after he cancelled peace talks with the Taliban. Trump cancelled the peace talks in retaliation for a bomb attack that killed one US soldier last week. During his speech, Trump issued a threat against militants ever attacking the US again. He said: “If for any reason, they come back to our country, we will go wherever they are, and use power, the likes of which the United States has never used before.”

2,500 PEOPLE MISSING IN THE BAHAMAS
Aljazeera News reports officials have said that 2,500 people have been registered as missing in the wake of Hurricane Dorian. The official count may include people who have fled to shelters around the islands. “This list has not yet been checked against government records of who are staying in shelters or who have been evacuated,” A National Emergency Management Agency spokesman said. “The database processing is underway.” It has been confirmed that at least 50 people have been killed by the storm. But warned the death toll is likely to rise substantially. Tent housing is now underway to help shelter those left homeless. Officials are planning to erect two “tent city” centres that will hold roughly 4,000 people. There are an estimated 70,000 people who have been left homeless following Hurrican Dorian.

CHINA WAIVES TARIFFS ON SOME US GOODS
CNN reports China has waived import tariffs on 16 US goods. It is the first time China has issued such exemptions since the US-China trade war began. The exemption on the 16 products includes shrimp, fish meal and cancer treatment drugs. The exemption starts on September 17 and will last for one year. Chinese importers can apply for a refund on tariffs already levied on 12 of the products. Four products are eligible for exemption but not for refunds. But it was quickly pointed out that the exemption list didn’t include major goods subject to tariffs – like soybeans or meat. Artur Baluszynski, head of research at the Henderson Rowe said: “Chinese tariffs that really matter are the ones on US agricultural and manufacturing goods, produced mainly in states with strong support for Donald Trump.” Adding: “We just don’t see China willing to negotiate on them before the race for US presidential elections really kicks off.”
