‘RECKLESS AND UNLAWFUL’ AMNESTY ACCUSES HONG KONG POLICE OF ABUSE
Aljazeera says Amnesty International has accused Hong Kong police of torture and other abuses in their handling of the pro-democracy protests. But police deny the charge and say they have shown restraint in the face of increased violence. Nicolas Bequelin said: “The evidence leaves little room for doubt – in an apparent thirst for retaliation, Hong Kong’s security forces have engaged in a disturbing pattern of reckless and unlawful tactics against people during the protests.” Adding: “This has included arbitrary arrests and retaliatory violence against arrested persons in custody, some of which has amounted to torture.”

MORE THAN 1,000 RESCUES, EVACUATION AS TROPICAL STORM IMELDA SOAKS SOUTHERN US
Arab News reports parts of Texas and Louisiana have been flooded by the Tropical storm, Imelda. Both rescue crews and volunteers with boats have desperately tried to reach the scores of stranded drivers and families trapped in their homes. The relentless downpour drew corporations to Hurricane Harvey two years ago. Officials in Harris County said there had been a combination of at least 1,000 high water rescues and evacuations to get people to shelter. And more than 900 flights were cancelled or delayed in busy Houston.

POMPEO SAYS US IS BUILDING ANTI-IRAQ COALITION AFTER SAUDI OIL ATTACK
France 24 says the US said on Thursday it was building a coalition to deter Iranian threats following the attack on the Saudi oil facilities. Iran has warned US President Donald Trump against being dragged into a war in the Middle East. And said it would meet any offensive action with a crushing response. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Trump, who has ordered more sanctions on Iran, wants a peaceful solution to the crisis.
