EastEnders has provided us with some iconic characters during almost four decades on our screens, and Jay Brown’s (Jamie Borthwick) emotional storylines have been particularly resonating with soap fans of late.
From Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor) to Alfie Moon (Shane Richie), the cast and characters of EastEnders have always proved to be one of the show’s biggest assets.
Jay Brown (previously Jay Mitchell) is no exception, and, from the character’s introduction in 2006, he has had some dramatic plots over the years.
Recently, the son of Jase Dyer (Stephen Lord) and Karen Brown has had to endure the news that his partner Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold) has an incurable brain tumour.
After their touching final trip to the seaside, Jay is now to face the most challenging day of his life, with Lola’s departure date from the show now confirmed to be later this month.
With Jay featuring prominently in the show of late, many EastEnders fans are looking to learn more about the actor that portrays him.
Who plays Jay in EastEnders?
Actor Jamie Borthwick, 28, from Barking in London, has played Jay Brown since he arrived at Albert Square when Jamie was just 12 years old.
According to IMDB, he has appeared in over 1,200 episodes of the show over the character’s years in Watford.
Jamie has several other credits outside of the soap, including parts in Gina’s Laughing Gear and the Lee Mack sitcom Not Going Out.
He’s also made an appearance as Jay Brown in two editions of the BBC’s Children in Need.
In 2008, Jamie won a British Soap Award for Best Dramatic Performance from a Young Actor or Actress.
The actor is active across social media, posting images from the set on Instagram and shots of him with other members of the EastEnders cast.
Acting clearly runs in the family, as Charlie Winter, who played Hunter Owen on EastEnders, turned out to be Jamie’s second cousin.
In a reveal that almost sounds like a plotline from the show, Jamie told OK! Magazine: ‘My great uncle is called Charlie Winter, so when they said there was a kid coming in called Charlie Winter, I was like, “Seriously? Turns out we are second cousins”.’
