While the UK marks the Coronation of King Charles III over the weekend, the US and Mexico have their own celebration going on today – called Cinco De Mayo.

Cinco De Mayo is an important date in Mexican history, but the holiday itself is actually more widely celebrated in the US.

So, what is Cinco De Mayo, when is it, and how is it celebrated?

Here’s all you need to know.

    What is Cinco De Mayo?

Cinco De Mayo – which means Fifth of May – commemorates Mexico’s victory against France in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

You may also see it referred to as Battle of Puebla Day.

In a nutshell: France, led by Emperor Napoleon III, attempted to invaded Mexico after its President Juárez paused paying back debts owed to some European countries following a Civil War.

During the battle, the Mexican army was able to stave off France’s forces, and it was considered a great success given France’s well-known military capabilities.

The victory was fleeting, as France invaded again and occupied Mexico City not too long after. Napoleon III then retreated from the country just a few years later in 1867.

How is Cinco De Mayo celebrated?

Cinco De Mayo takes place on May 5 each year, and in 2023 it falls on a Friday, and in 2024 on a Sunday.

It is not a public holiday in Mexico – and more widely celebrated is the annual Dia de la Independencia, aka Mexican Independence Day, falling on September 16.

In some parts of Mexico, and specifically the state Puebla, where the battle took place, locals may hold military parades or battle reenactments.

But History.com writes that Cinco De Mayo is like any other day for many people in Mexico.

However, it is a big deal in the United States – often an opportunity to celebrate Mexican music, culture and cuisine.

In California and many major cities around the country, such as Chicago and Denver, you can expect the day to feature parties, parades and festivals, music concerts, the playing of Mariachi and other traditional music, dancing, and plenty of Mexican food.
