Storm Franklin hits UK with flooding and high winds

The UK has been hit by its third storm – Storm Franklin – today and it is battering the UK with strong winds and heavy rain.

Northern Ireland has severe flooding in parts and hundreds of flood warnings remain in place across England, Scotland and Wales.

Franklin hits just days after Storm Eunice killed three people and left 1.4 million homes without power – Franklin has caused “severe disruption” and travellers have been warned to check trains and buses before they travel.

Monday morning saw the highest wind gust speeds reach 79mph in Capel Curig in Wales, and 78mph in Orlock Head, Northern Ireland.

The Met Office issued two warnings for Monday – an amber warning for wind in Northern Ireland and a yellow warning for wind covering Wales, Northern Ireland, most of England and parts of southwest Scotland.

Storm Franklin is the UK’s third named storm in a week – following Dudley and Eunice. The devastation from the first two storms is still being felt – over 33,0000 homes are still waiting to be reconnected to power supplies.

Monday Travel disruptions – Storm Franklin causes travel chaos

Manchester Airport diverted nine flights on Monday morning because of storm winds. BA said the winds made it difficult to unload baggage from its planes – causing massive delays for passengers after landing. The airline struggled to land and restock plans on time – affecting inbound and outbound movements.

In other news, the O2 arena in London will remain closed until Friday after Storm Eunice ripped sections of the fabric roof.
