US tech giants to be investigated by the EU – could face MASSIVE fines
The EU will launch an investigation into three of the biggest tech firms in the world over uncompetitive practices – Meta, Apple and Alphabet (which owns Google).
They are being looked at for potential breaches of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) introduced in 2022.
If found to have broken the rules they could face massive fines – up to 10% of their annual turnover.
Just six companies have obligations under the DMA, but they are also the world’s largest tech firms: Alphabet, Apple, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft and ByteDance.
Five of the six tech firms are in the US, whilst ByteDance is headquartered in Beijing.
Just two weeks after submitting their compliance reports, three of them now face questions.
It comes just weeks after the EU fined Apple £1.5bn for breaking competition laws over music streaming, and just recently Apple was sued by the US government, who accuse them of monopolising the smartphone market.
