- US investigates leak of classified documents on Israel’s plans to attack Iran
- Israel has vowed to respond to Iran’s missile attack but has not indicated when it will happen
- US is investigating whether the information was deliberately leaked or stolen
The U.S. government is currently investigating a leak of classified documents that detail American assessments of Israel’s potential military response to Iran.
The leaked documents reportedly include satellite imagery showing Israel moving military assets in preparation for a response to a missile attack from Iran on October 1. The materials were shareable within the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, which includes the US, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
Israel has been deliberating its response to Iran’s missile strike, with its defence minister warning that any retaliation will be “deadly, precise, and surprising.”
The two leaked documents are attributed to the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency (NSA). They were first published on an Iranian-aligned Telegram channel. One document even references Israel’s nuclear capabilities, a topic both the U.S. and Israel have not publicly acknowledged, suggesting that such an option is off the table for any planned military action.
Reports suggest that the leaked documents may have been released to expose the extent of Israel’s planned retaliation, potentially to disrupt it. The US is examining whether the information was deliberately leaked by an agent or stolen, possibly through hacking.
