EXTINCTION REBELLION: POLICE BAN LONDON PROTESTS

BBC News reports police have officially issued a London-wide ban on the activist group Extinction Rebellion. And have been clearing its activists from Trafalgar Square. In a statement issued on Monday evening, the Met Police said demonstrators protesting in the capital after 21:00 GMT could be arrested. On Twitter, Extinction Rebellion’s London branch called the move “an outrage.” The protests began last Monday and were due to last for two weeks. So far 1,400 people have been arrested.

JOHNSON’S BREXIT PLAN WOULD LEAVE EVERYONE IN THE UK £2000 WORSE OFF, STUDY FINDS

The Independent reports the PM’s Brexit plan would leave knock up to £50bn off the economy and leave everyone in the UK £2000 worse off. Academics at King’s College London sad the plan would be worse for the UK economy than Theresa May’s deal. The current proposal being discussed in Brussels would hit public finances by up to £49bn and even the best-case scenario resulting in a £16bn fall in GDP. Johnson’s deal will do more harm than May’s because it would guarantee the UK will not remain in a customs union with the EU. The prime minister is also reported to want to scrap “level playing field” standards that ensure fair competition within the UK.

ENGLAND EURO 2020 QUALIFIER IN SOFIA HALTED TWICE OVER RACIST ABUSE

The Guardian says England’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Bulgaria in Sofia came close to being abandoned on Monday night after home fans repeatedly racially abused Tyrone Mings and other black players. FA chairman Greg Clarke described it as “one of the most appalling nights I’ve seen in football.” The ref first stopped play in the 27th minute when the visitors were up 2-0 after Gareth Southgate alerted officials to what appeared to be monkey chants. As part of Uefa’s strick anti-racism protocols, an announcement was read out over the speaker system which urged home fans to cease or fave the match being abandoned.
