UK new net zero plan targets emissions and costs
The UK government has announced a new plan aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and lowering energy costs through investment in renewable energy and nuclear power.
The strategy, called Powering Up Britain, focuses largely on increasing the use of clean energy sources such as wind, solar, and nuclear power, with the aim of driving down emissions and reducing energy costs.
The plan includes a range of measures, such as rebranding the ECO+ scheme to the Great British Insulation Scheme to help insulate homes, funding for green hydrogen projects, and greater flexibility in planning for onshore wind and accelerated planning for offshore wind and solar.
The government has also announced the first carbon capture sites and provided a detailed outline of how the UK will achieve its climate targets.
However, some experts have criticised the plan for lacking significant funding for home insulation, which is one of the most effective ways to reduce heat loss and lower bills and emissions.
Others have expressed frustration that the plan does not adequately address the issue of connecting new renewable energy to the power grid.
Despite these criticisms, the government has expressed its ambition to make the UK’s electricity the cheapest in Europe by 2035.
