US President-elect Donald Trump announced slap tarriffs on goods from Mexico and Canada – two of the US’s closest allies, and 10% on Chinese imports, citing the drug trade and immigration. Posting on Truth Social, he pledged to sign executive orders implementing these measures immediately after taking office on January 20.
Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump said that on the first day of his presidency, he will charge Mexico and Canada a 25% tariff on all products coming into the U.S. He added in a separate social-media post that he would impose an additional 10% tariff on all products that come into the U.S. from China, though he didn’t specify whether that levy would come on his first day in office. Such a tariff would come on top of existing tariffs the U.S. has already imposed on Chinese goods.
“As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders.”
