Trump Covid-19 diagnosis: What impact will it have on the election?
In an unpredictable year, the president’s Covid-19 diagnosis has thrown the US into even more uncertainty and the election into uncharted territory.
President Trump confirmed at 1 am on Friday that he and the first lady have tested positive for coronavirus and will begin quarantine immediately.
Trump has himself flouted the rules around facemasks and social distancing, and even mocked his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, for wearing a mask.
He’s spent months downplaying the seriousness of the pandemic, shaking hands with visitors despite public health warnings, and allowing his supporters to attend rallies without masks.
But what does his diagnosis mean for the election? There are still two more presidential debates and the rest of the campaign trail. Will Joe Biden suspend his campaign out of respect if Trump is forced to? Will Trump’s supporters feel like there has been a failure of leadership now the president has the virus?
There’s going to be some hugely consequential talks over the next few days, as the US – still reeling from the pandemic and months of unrest – finds itself forced into even more uncertain times.
