Tens of thousands of anti-government protesters marched at a train terminal used for transit to mainland China. The protesters wanted to inform tourists of the resistance to the extradition bill that was proposed.
The protest was an attempt to show mainland China the peaceful nature of the mass protests. Mainland China’s restricted media means most of the rallies have been absent from the news.
“Most mainlanders do not know what we are fighting for, and this will be a very slow, educational process. It’s like running a marathon” said Edward Chin.
Whilst the massive rally was peaceful, late on Sunday violence erupted between police and the, mostly young, protesters. Police brutality towards protesters was called into question after the June 12 protest.
Jeremy Hunt has said the Chinese Government could face “serious consequences” over the treatment of protesters. Hunt reiterated China must honour Hong Kong’s high level of autonomy.
