The fresh wave of strikes across the train sector begins today, with an estimated 20 per cent expected to run. Along with snow and icy conditions, there are expected to be major travel disruptions for Britain today.
Tributes have been paid at a vigil for the three boys who died after plunging into an icy lake near Solihull.
Train strikes begin as snow and ice hits UK
Rail workers walk out today as a fresh round of strike action gets underway. The union members will talk out on four days this week – today and Wednesday and again on Friday and Saturday. The industrial action – over pay and conditions – will mean a near-total shutdown of Britain’s railways. Along with the strikes, the UK has been hit with snow, ice and fog adding further disruption to travel.

Vigil held for children who died on icy lake
A vigil was held for the three boys who died after falling into an icy lake in Babbs Mill Park, Solihull on Sunday. The three boys aged eight, 10 and 11 were pulled from the lake but died in hospital later. A fourth boy, aged six, remains in critical condition in hospital. For the three boys who died, flowers, balloons and soft toys were left by mourners who had gathered to pay tribute to the children.

Australian shoot-out leave six dead, including 2 cops
Six people have been killed in a shoot-out at a remote Australian property. Amongst the six people shot dead two were police officers. Four police officers were at the property in search of someone reported missing. Two officers were killed, one was grazed by a bullet and the other managed to escape without injury. The killers also killed a neighbour. After a lengthy siege, three suspects were shot and killed by cops. The motive is unclear.

Anti-government protests in Peru in anger at new president
Unrest is sweeping Peru as anger towards the new unelected president intensified on Monday. There have been reports of protesters blocking roads and storming an international airport – causing flights to be grounded for hours. Supporters of the former president – the leftwing Pedro Castillo, took to the streets in anger at his impeachment and arrest, and his successor and former deputy, Dina Boluatre taking his place as president. She is the sixth president to hold power in as many years.

American FTX founder arrested in Bahamas
The American founder of the collapse cryptocurrency exchange FTX has been arrested in The Bahamas. Sam Bankman-Fried is set to appear in a magistrates’ court on Tuesday. He was arrested on “financial offences” against laws in the US and The Bahamas. Last month FTX filed for bankruptcy in the US, leaving many users unable to withdraw their funds. A court filing shows FTX owed its 50 largest creditors almost $3.1bn. Bahamas police force had taken the Californian native into custody after receiving “formal notification” from the US government that it had filed criminal charges and was “likely to request his extradition”, said attorney-general Ryan Pinder.

Most of the papers lead on the 10-year-old boy who died on the icy lake as he attempted to save three other children who had fallen through the ice and into the freezing cold water.
