Watch SpaceX prototype launch and then explode after 6 mins
SpaceX’s rocket ship crashed and exploded into flames just minutes after its much-anticipated launch.
Starship’s test had been delayed repeatedly over the past week and excitement had been building since a last-minute engine abort on Tuesday.
But the rocket’s eventual launch from SpaceX’s facility in Texas was uneventful and the prototype appeared to come close to reaching its goal altitude of around eight miles.
The 50m-tall stainless steel spacecraft soared over the Gulf of Mexico before turning sideways as planned and heading back towards Texas, near the Mexico border.
The engines reignited but on touch down, the self-guided rocket exploded and its parts flew everywhere.
The test flight lasted only 6 minutes and 40 seconds and Elon Musk – who plans to send people to space in the rocket in the next six years- blamed technical problems for the rocket’s explosion.
But the test was still a success with Musk saying SpaceX had obtained “all the data we needed”.
