Lego Dimensions – be warned: getting all five won’t be cheap (pic: Traveller’s Tales)
Between Sega’s own teases and rumours of five new Lego sets, 2023 sounds like it could be another big year for Sonic The Hedgehog.
Despite having an entire themed expansion for Lego Dimensions in 2016, it wasn’t until 2021 that Sonic The Hedgehog received a proper real-life Lego set.
It didn’t even start as an official product either. A fan submitted their own suggestion via the Lego Ideas website and it proved popular enough with others for Lego to make it official. Since then, the company has shared no plans to make subsequent Sonic sets. At least, not publicly.
If new rumours are to be believed, that initial set must’ve sold well as there are plans to release five more Sonic sets in 2023.
It’s claimed that the sets will launch in August, though buying all five will set you back a pretty penny. Each one is said to cost $29.99, $39.99, $49.99, $59.99, and $99.99.
That’s just under $280 in total, which is roughly £230, although no one will know precisely what they’ll cost in the UK until official prices are announced.
The rumour comes via the Instagram page of Promobricks, a Lego themed blog that has shared related leaks in the past.
They add that all five sets can be combined to form a bigger playset and will include new minifigures. Although there’re no details on what levels the sets will be based on or which characters will be featured.
It makes a lot of sense for Lego to capitalise on Sonic’s current success. The hedgehog has enjoyed a strong 2022 thanks to the second live-action movie, the Sonic Prime Netflix show, and his newest mainline game, Sonic Frontiers.
Sega is hoping to keep this momentum going throughout 2023, with Sonic series producer Takashi Iizuka telling Famitsu that a ‘second wave’ of content is planned for the new year.
‘This past year was the biggest year in Sonic history, including the release of the movie sequel, new titles Sonic Origins and Sonic Frontiers, and the Netflix animation Sonic Prime,’ he said (as translated by Gematsu).
‘We are preparing a second wave to keep the fans happy and maintain that momentum going into 2023.’

Sega has already confirmed a roadmap of post-launch content for Sonic Frontiers that will last throughout 2023, and include new game modes and even additional playable characters.
Neither the company nor Iizuka have mentioned any potential Lego collaborations, but it would make a lot of sense for those rumoured sets to be part of Sega’s plans.
