Six migrants killed after Mexico soldiers open fire
Six migrants have died and 10 others were injured after Mexican soldiers opened fire on a vehicle carrying 33 people in the southern part of the country. The incident happened around 25 miles north of Mexico’s border with Guatemala.
According to Mexico’s defense ministry, the soldiers saw the vehicle speeding and tried to stop it, but the driver attempted to evade them. Soldiers reported hearing explosions, prompting two officers to open fire. Both soldiers have since been suspended, and an investigation is underway.
The group of migrants included individuals from Egypt, Nepal, Cuba, India, and Pakistan. Four people died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. The rest of the passengers were turned over to immigration authorities.
It comes as Mexico faces growing pressure from the U.S. to curb the flow of migrants heading north to the U.S. border. Many migrants make the dangerous journey through Mexico, risking accidents, criminal exploitation, and corruption along the way.
