Ryan Gosling defends his casting as Ken in Barbie movie informing haters ‘your hypocrisy is exposed’

It seems Ryan Gosling is well and truly in his Barbie era (Picture: Warner Bros)

Ryan Gosling has the best – but most bizarre – response to social media haters who said he’s too old to play Ken in the new Barbie movie.

The 42-year-old actor is starring in the live-action film alongside Margot Robbie (who is playing Barbie – duh).

Over the past few months we’ve seen glimpses of the magical Barbieland in two trailers, and have a taste of what the soundtrack – which includes a song from the Place Beyond The Pines actor himself – might entail.

The hype is real, and Barbie era is officially here. Get your nails done, ladies: it’s hot pink summer.

With it comes the Drive actor and – surprisingly – it seems he is more in love with the film than anyone else if his recent interview is anything to go by.

While many people are buzzing to have Ryan portray Ken in what looks to be hilarious style, others thought he was a little old for the part.

We cannot wait to see him in full Ken mode, and Margot Robbie as the iconic doll (Picture: Warner Bros)

Ryan as Ken is going to be truly captivating, we’re sure (Picture: Warner Bros)

Well, to be honest, we’d say lots of people are too old for Barbie dolls but here we are counting down the days (51) until the film’s release on 21 July.

But that wasn’t Ryan’s response, as he told GQ in their cover interview with him that if people don’t like him in the role they can, er, find another Ken ‘to play with’.

Yep, his comeback started off weird and it only got weirder, as the Notebook heartthrob continued: ‘It is funny… this kind of clutching-your-pearls idea of, like, #notmyken.

‘Like you ever thought about Ken before this? But suddenly, it’s like, “No, we’ve cared about Ken this whole time”.

‘No, you didn’t. You never did. You never cared. Barbie never f***** with Ken. That’s the point.

‘If you ever really cared about Ken, you would know that nobody cared about Ken. So your hypocrisy is exposed. This is why his story must be told.’

Wow, we weren’t expecting that, but we admire his passion for the role, and so did fans, as one wrote on Twitter: ‘The ken we needed but didn’t deserve.’

Another said: ‘Ryan Gosling is the first ever KENthusiast he deserved the role.’

Ryan also explained how Ken reminds him of himself as a child (Picture: Getty Images)

Ryan’s affinity with the muscular doll character goes a bit deeper than you’d think given Ken is a children’s toy with no notable personality or qualities.

The La La Land star explained how he’s found connections between his childhood self and Ken.

He reminisced how alike he was to the plastic doll with his Hammer pants as he danced around in ‘the mall’.

When he started making more ‘serious’ films – see Place Beyond The Pines and Drive – Ryan felt some distance between himself and that little boy.

So let’s just say he’s pleased to see him again, even if their meeting is in a fairly unlikely – and very pink – place.

Ryan also explained his absence from Hollywood over the past few years as being down to his partner Eva Mendez giving birth to their second child.
